I’d like to talk about my vision for the Diverse Deaf Community and its role for the next two years within RID. I envision RID committing to fully supporting the Diverse Deaf Community and allow RID to take the lead in modeling what the interpreting field should look like.
Having ties to the Diverse Deaf Community will result in our interpreting community benefiting greatly in the long run. The needs of those communities can look to the interpreting field as an ally which promotes further the establishment of even deeper connections. As a field who provides services to the Diverse Deaf Community, we must figure out how to maximize our full potential in supporting them. This might translate into supporting efforts to pass legislation to further aid Diverse Deaf Communities. Let’s strive for our Diverse Deaf Community to take the lead and we as a profession can thrive alongside their side.
